If you are like most people, you probably take your plumbing for granted and don’t think much about the need to replace your pipes. If you live in a modern home, you may be justified in assuming the plumbing is up to par. However, if you live in an older home, you may be ignoring signs that your pipes need to be replaced. Watch for these common signs that your pipes may need updating.
Leaks around your pipes are one of the most common problems from old plumbing. Check around the sink and tub, under cabinets and anywhere pipes travel through your home. You may notice damp or discolored spots on the walls or near the base of sinks, tubs and toilets. Another telltale sign of leaky pipes is squishy floors or walls that have deteriorated from moisture that has gone undetected. If you notice leaks in your plumbing, don’t ignore it. It can cause damage to the structure of your home and create the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. Your plumber can assess leaks and determine the source. He can also tell you whether your pipes need replacing.
Some pipes rust as they age and can lead to brown or reddish-brown water. This occurs when bits of rust break away from the pipe and are carried to your faucets and other water fixtures. If you notice rusty-colored water coming from your faucets, stains in the shower and laundry that is stained, it may be time to replace the pipes. Not only does the rusty water affect laundry, but it also affects the quality of your drinking water too.
Low Water Pressure
If you notice that your water pressure isn’t what it used to be, it may be a sign that your existing pipes are filled with mineral deposits or rust. As pipes age, the build up slowly increases, narrowing the diameter of the pipe and resulting in low water pressure. If you experience low water pressure that is not related to other issues, such as a problem with the pressure tank, it may be time to replace the pipes.
Over time, pipes can begin to corrode. Examine all exposed pipes in the basement or other areas for signs of corrosion. If you notice discoloration, stains, flaking, dimpling, pimples or flaking on the outside of your pipes, take this as your cue that the pipe is corroding and will soon need to be replaced.
